●     Detail the preparations you've made before leaving for your study abroad experience, such as visa applications, packing, and any cultural research.

While preparing for this experience I had many things to consider and take care of starting months in advance. As soon as I found out where I was going to be studying abroad, I started doing research on the area and the school I would be in. Luckily, my coordinator from New Zealand was able to tell me all of the requirements I had to do months in advance such as the correct steps to get my visa and some recommendations regarding reaching out to the people I would be staying or working with. Although I never got to research and plan to the depths I had hoped I feel ready to leave for this experience.

I already had my passport from years ago, leaving getting my visa to be the most stressful part for immigration. Once my coordinator had everything confirmed, she sent me detailed instructions to apply for the correct visa. I thought this would mean the process would go smoothly, but I did not get confirmed until February 2nd. There were many extra documents that New Zealand Immigration wanted me to submit after reviewing my initial application. I had to include items such as speeding ticket reports from 2018, confirmation letters of my placement, confirmation that this placement led to my graduation and was a requirement, and evidence of funds to support myself and get back home. I went into February nervous that my visa would not be approved in time as my flight is scheduled for February 9th, but everything turned out fine once they reviewed my added documents.

Most of the research I did revolved around the school I would be placed in. I searched through each of the tabs on their page. It was definitely more catered to the students but I was able to learn a little information about the school and its policies. I also spent a lot of time listening to podcasts and watching videos explaining what New Zealand culture is like and places I should be sure to see while I am there. I look forward to my first week where I get to meet everyone and see these customs in person.

Packing is always something I do very last minute. I was allowed a checked bag with my flight as well as my carry-on and personal item so I was not worried about space to fit stuff. I packed all of my dress clothes first and then just filled the remaining space with clothes for when I am at the house, or out doing touristy activities. I had plenty of room leftover, but my suitcases were heavy. I do wish I had packed earlier and made a checklist rather than just throwing stuff in as I thought of it right up at the end, but I don't see myself ever packing in that manner. I have not thought of anything I have forgotten that will be a huge inconvenience when I am over there, as I will be able to buy items as needed.
